Still a pre-broadband era.
« on: 18 November, 2011, 01:01:19 AM »
Hi guys! I'm finally going to have "faster" internet again since we're switching from an abysmal ISP: TalkTalk; To the wonderful Sky digital. Why do I feel the need to shout this from the rooftops you may ask?

Well, on TalkTalk we suffered speeds no better than 20KB/s and when all four computers were using the net a miserable 2-6KB/s. Let us not forget, it's TWENTY ELEVEN. So, has anyone else had to suffer anything similar to that? It's such a digital age I think we've all become so connected to the internet (hurr hurr) that we can't live without it. And when we cannot access or do simple tasks due to a horrific connection it becomes infuriating. My point really is we shouldn't still be on speeds of 2-6KB/s in this day and age.

Anyone else has any ISP nightmares?

I'm still stuck on my ~5kb/sec dial-up. No broadband other than satellite or wireless is available here, but it's way too expensive for the speeds ($100+ a month for like 50kb/sec.)

Something should be done! D: There is no way that those speeds should be acceptable in 2011. How far's the closest city?

Just a few miles away. They have cable there (actually, they have DSL and cable both just a little over a mile from me, just not here!)

The sad thing is it wouldn't cost them that much to extend the coverage just those couple extra miles >.<

My parents have Talk Talk. It always seemed pretty decent to me, though that was probably relative. Before TT bought them out, it was a Tiscali connection. Now THAT was bad - not only was it sluggish, it would cut out for a few minutes at a time multiple times a day. The TT connection is actually reliable. While it for example cannot stream a video as quickly as it plays it (forcing a few minutes of waiting with it paused while it buffers), I don't think it's 20kbps slow.

However, in Scotland, me and my flatmates are with BE. Absolutely incredible connection. Very reliable, very fast. Their main issue is their coverage - if you're in a rural area, such as my parents' house, BE is more than likely unavailable. S'one of the benefits of living in the centre of a city, though.

I once had dial-up. Let's just say it wasn't fun. The only thing I enjoyed was not being affected by IP bans.
The next sentence is true. The previous sentence is false.
