Have any members been banned or deleted in the past? That's a possible cause of this problem.

Plenty of members have been deleted. I've recounted the forum statistics and I can't seem to come to a conclusion about this bug.

I don't think that banned users are counted. (I dont know how many banned members their are though)

I can garuntee this is your cause. I don't know why, but every forum I have come across has had the same problem (except for the odd one or two). It could be because of what T-Dub said, but with some services (such as zetaboards) it's a glitch in the forum stats.

I can assure you it isn't what Guy Sivan said though :P

It is banned members. Banned people are not counted in the actual member pages.

I think not. You have to be a registered member to be in the member pages.

And if I recall, I thought that banned members were included in the member pages as well (unless that's just on certain forums where banned members are not actually banned.)

In your ADMIN CONTROL PANEL there should be a button "RESYNC STATS" this will re-count all the members and posts. It should show the right amount of members. If not it would be a glitch.

When I used SMF it was a strange experience so I switched to PHPBB.

We've already tried recounting forum totals. We've found out that banned users aren't included in the total member count.
